Local businesses and organizations also play a key role. Corporate volunteer days and sponsorship opportunities allow companies in North Idaho to support affordable housing while engaging their teams in hands-on service.

Brandi’s Story

Growing up in a trailer, I used to admire the big homes with beautiful Christmas trees glowing in the front windows. I always dreamed that one day I’d have a home where I could put up a tree like that too.

Thanks to my Habitat home, that dream came true.

This house has given my kids a safe place to grow, laugh, and feel secure. And every year, I put up the most gorgeous Christmas tree in the window — not just because it’s pretty, but because it reminds me how far we’ve come.

I’m so grateful for this home, for the memories it’s held, and for the chance to give my children the stability I once only wished for.

Janae’s Story

In 2012, I received a call from Barbara with Habitat for Humanity. I had previously Applied, but was denied the first time around. I again had applied and was waiting to hear if I was accepted. I remember praying a lot about this decision.

I wasn’t really sure if I wanted to stay in Sandpoint. I was a single mom of 2 young children, and life felt pretty rocky with unusual circumstances. My prayers consisted of guidance and direction- and if I was chosen, then I would know this is the place I am meant to be. If I wasn’t chosen, then I’d know Sandpoint isn’t where I need to be raising my children. Barbara asked me if she could come by my apartment to “chat.”

A couple of days later, I was told I had been chosen for a new home to be built in 2013. To say I was shocked, is an understatement. I had feelings of joy, fear of it being taken away, fear of not being worthy of being chosen, when there are so so many families in need. After the feelings of shock faded, I was at peace.

Peace knowing my prayers were heard. In the spring of 2013, the Volunteers broke ground! Slowly, but surely, a foundation was laid, walls and trusses went in. Siding, cupboards, carpet, plumbing and electrical were installed.

I spent countless hours painting, picking up nails, wiping things down, making treats for the Volunteers, and dreaming about this home to be mine. Fast forward, my dreams did come true. In January, it will be 13 years that I have lived in my Home. Because I had a roof over my head, and a safe place to raise my children, this will always be a special place for each of us. I have been able to learn to garden, how to build a fence, how to landscape, how to unclog drains, how to put up wallpaper, how to cook more, and the list goes on of the things I’ve been able to do, because I have a place to call my own.

I know that Habitat choosing me was not by chance or luck. I know it was because I was ready for this! This was meant to be! I am forever grateful that this opportunity happened to my family. Our lives were endlessly changed for the better, because of Habitat.
